Sewage Treatment Plants
Sewage Treatment Plants
A sewage treatment plant cleans all wastewater that a building produces to create an effluent that causes no harm to the environment, and can be safely discharged into a watercourse.
Sewage treatment plants are required when a building isn’t connected to the mains sewage system, which is around 5% of UK homes.

Replacing a Septic Tank
A new environmental law came into effect in 2015, this law requires that already installed septic tanks need to upgrade their systems to a sewage treatment plant if the liquid effluent is discharged into a watercourse.
This is because septic tanks produce a highly polluting effluent which is high in ammonia, and not safe for the environment. Therefore, if you are wanting to drain your water into a river or stream, a sewage treatment plant is your only option.
Due to this new environmental law, sewage treatment plants are fast becoming the preferred system.
How Does It Work?
There are three steps to the sewage treatment plant process.
1. The wastewater flows into the primary chamber. Here, gravity separates any solids and they sink to the bottom of the chamber and form a sludge which is to be tankered at a later date.
2. The remaining liquid will then flow into the second chamber for the treatment. Here compressed air is pumped in, this encourages the naturally aerobic bacteria to flourish.
3. The treated wastewater then goes into the final part of the tank. In this section, the bacteria settles at the bottom where it is removed back into the first tank, and the clean water now safely flows into a watercourse.
ADVANTAGES
- Our sewage treatment plants are available in a range of sizes, meaning they are suitable for both small, and large scale locations
- Sewage treatment plants are affordable, clean and have minimal effect on the environment
- Available in both electric and non-electric, choose what suits you best
- Sewage treatment plants produce a clean non-polluting effluent- posing no threat to the environment
- Although sewage treatment plants may seem more expensive than a septic tank, this is soon recovered by the lower running costs
Emptying
Over time, sludge can build up in the sewage treatment plant. We recommend that the treatment plant is emptied once a year, unless the installer advises otherwise. We offer a tinkering service, suitable for emptying your sewage treatment plant. Read more about our tankering service HERE.
